July 8th - Left Amarillo, Texas this morning and traveled 4 1/2 hours to Carlsbad, New Mexico. It truly is a desert here. We're staying at the Carlsbad KOA campground. Joey and I like the KOA campgrounds. They are clean and have a pool. In 100+ heat, a pool is very important. It is very dry here. The last state that was actually green pasture land was Kansas.
This place is rich in history. The Jones family, who had a large ranch here in the 1800's, took Billy the Kid in as a ranch hand. Billy returned here many times to visit what he considered his family.
Went to Carlsbad Caverns the next day on the 9th. Three and half miles of underground caverns, The temperature was 56 degrees underground in these caverns. Nice time to cool off during the mid-day heat. Also stopped off at the "Living Desert Zoo," where rescued animals are kept for recuperation. Saw mountain lions, golden eagle and many other animals who live in the desert. Beautiful place at the top of a mountain. New Mexico is beautiful.
